Upper Darby seems to be gaining traction as an overnight destination, with two major brands announcing their entrance into the area this year, writes Kenneth Hilario for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The new hotels will add to Upper Darby’s recent upswing, spurred by the recent rise of nearby retail and dining destinations.
Holiday Inn by International Hotel Group will be constructing a six-story hotel with 100 rooms next to Drexelbrook. The land development application for the Holiday Inn was approved by Upper Darby Council on Jan. 18, and is expected to be finished in a year. It will create up to 160 construction jobs and, once the hotel opens, up to 31 full-time and 37 part-time positions.
Choice Hotels International will be opening a 100-room Comfort Suites in an existing four-story apartment building at 130 Garrett Road. The project is a retrofit on a building adjacent to the Township Municipal Building. It will create more than 30 construction jobs and between 35 and 40 positions when completed.
Upper Darby Township Mayor Thomas N. Micozzie said that he expects the Upper Darby Council to review and take action on the application for land development submitted by the Comfort Suites during next month’s meeting.
