After more than a half-century of being a fixture on Baltimore Pike in Media, the Riddle Ale House is closing its doors for good, writes Kevin Tustin for the Daily Times.
The restaurant was founded in 1962 by Arnold Pompei and has been run by three generations of his family. It quickly became a local favorite for its iconic roast beef sandwich.
The restaurant had been one of the rare holdouts in the sprawling Granite Run Mall complex as the shopping center goes through a massive renovation to become a mixed-use development.
Arnold Pompei, the current owner, has been working at the restaurant for more than 50 years. He said he has sold both the business and the property and has no plans to reopen at another location.
“It’s the right time chronologically, the right time financially, and the right time emotionally,” said Pompei. “It’s not easy for me to talk about it. I’ve been here a long time, and it’s a family business. It wasn’t an easy decision by any means.”
