The parade honoring the Villanova basketball team as this year’s NCAA champion has sparked debate on social media about whether the Delaware County-based school is also a Philadelphia one, writes Brian Hickey for PhillyVoice.
A number of people believed that the celebration should have paraded down Lancaster Avenue, instead of through Center City.
Meanwhile, others emphasized regional unity, and the importance of taking time to celebrate the good things that are finally happening in local sports.
For example, a supporter that wanted to show that Villanova is a Philadelphia team took the time to actually redraw the city map.
That “revised” version includes several suburban areas in Delaware and Montgomery counties.
The goal of the revised map was to show that the whole area has been considered a spiritual part of Philadelphia for some time now.
Which makes Villanova’s success in any sport a regional achievement … and an event that should be celebrated as such.
