A few Delaware County luminaries recently paid tribute to the nation’s 41st president, the late George H.W. Bush, who had close ties with local Republican leaders, writes Kathleen Carey for the Delaware County News Network.
Members of Delaware County GOP recalled Bush as one of the best men they ever met.
“Bush 41 was the most outstanding, the most truthful, the best family man,” said Charlie Sexton of the Springfield GOP.
Sexton was with the former president in October 1992 at a rally in Springfield. It was just after Bush’s debate with challenger Bill Clinton, and it did not go well for Republicans.
“I said, ‘I guess you’re a little disappointed about last night,'” Sexton said to the president at the time.
“Charlie,” Bush said, “it’s over. They’re going to punish me over the tax, but the tax was the right thing to do. And I’ve always done what’s right for the country.”
Plaudits for Bush came from all over the state.
Val DiGiorgio, chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, praised Bush as “a tremendous Republican president.”
U.S. Senator Patrick Toomey called Bush a “great American patriot.”
